vintage dinner tray picture frame
I picked these vintage t.v. dinner trays up at DI (Deseret Industries) in Utah a few years ago and made them into picture frames. I adore the shape of the trays and the awesome yellow! Anyway, thought ya'll (and I've only been in Atlanta for 3 months) might like the idea!
Materials:
t.v. dinner trays (or other metal trays)
clothespins
hot glue, or other glue that will stick wood to metal
1. glue the clothespins to the trays. done!
You could pick up a tray at Goodwill or a yard sale and paint it if you don't like the color. We love ours!

some of my favorite things
Peruvian and Scottish dolls
Vintage watch-maker's parts cases
Geode
vintage glass Virgin Mary slide
Here are some things that I have collected over the years that I absolutely love, but usually don't know what to do with. I finally found a spot in my studio to make a little display of them. Thought I'd share:)

maybe baby?

so yesterday I went to visit one of my favorite people in the whole world: Courtney Anderton. She had her super cute baby Avery a year ago and I had never met her! For her first birthday I thought I'd make some baby versions of things I make for myself! Above are pics of her wearing the headband (I also made a cute onesie but she hasn't worn that yet). Anyway, the stuff was such a hit, and Court was loving it so much, that I decided why not? I could try out the baby stuff... So, I will be adding some baby things to the blueeyedfreckle collection VERY SOON (they are in the works as I speak). Stay tuned!

I'm in an indie craft fair!

This is THE place to sell your "indie" (not mauve straw wreaths) crafts in ATL. It is a juried event, so they don't just let anyone sell at the event. Anyway, it will be my first craft fair (except the side show stint I did a couple weeks ago in my friends booth at a local high school), and I can't wait! I need to make my booth standout, without spending lots of money, which makes me feel like I am at Anthro again (make this place look amazing, expensive, vintage, artistic and only spend a tiny amount of money). Anyway, hopefully it will bring more sales to my ETSY shop, because I haven't done any promoting besides emailing my friends. I'm excited! Anyone who lives here, please come visit me at the event!

latest fave

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this artist's work. Her name is Gretchen Wagoner and her pieces have this beautiful quietness about them that just makes me want to stare for hours. She uses a mixture of collage, gouache, pencil, and occasionally resin or wax. I think my favorite aspect is the grey BFK Rives paper that she does most of these pieces on. I need to own a piece! Check her out here: http://www.gretchenwagoner.blogspot.com/

i'm DYEING for new colors:)
When I worked at Anthropologie I dyed EVERYTHING!!! I never kept anything the color it was made by the manufacturer. Hand-dyeing things gives them these soft, warm undertones and wonderful antique qualities. Yesterday (on my third day off for Sukkot) I wanted to make some more "birds of a feather" headbands, but I was not loving the colors in my feather bag. I only had one color of dye, but I thought I would give it a try (now I'm a poet). After dyeing a few feathers, my old addiction came back. The next thing I knew there was ribbon, felt, silk, feathers, and satin leaves in the dye bucket! I really do love dye (I even dyed the top part of my wedding dress slate blue after my wedding, so I could wear it again).
Want to dye some things, but scared? Here are a few tips:
1. start with small things. get used to how things dye before you try a big project (and if you go big use the washing machine method on the box/bottle)
2. splurge on the liquid dye. unless you are doing a big project, you probably won't use all of it and the liquid dye has a cap. the powder stuff gets everywhere once you open it. and you get colored boogers from inhaling it!
3. to do a small project like ribbon, etc just put the dye in a large tupperware or small bucket.
4. make sure the water is very hot. if you can't get it hot enough in the faucet, microwave it!
5. the items should be completely immersed in the dye water. don't forget to stir.
6. once you are done dyeing the items rinse them in cold water until the water runs clear.
If you have anymore questions, let me know!

Re-cycling
Living in an apartment, I don't have those recycling bins to throw my plastics and papers in, but I do my part to reuse as many things as possible in new and different ways, so that i don't make unnecessary garbage. When Franc and I moved into our Atlanta apartment, I thought it would be fun to use our cardboard boxes to decorate my studio with. I have wanted to do this since i saw this movie. Its pretty fun to have all the cardboard details. I really meant for it to be over the top cardboard in the studio, but my fingers became raw and I had to take a... ummmm... 1 month break. I will make more cardboard things in the next month or so.

something old is new again!
5 years ago I made the white feather hair piece pictured here. I was obsessed with feathers at the time, and loved that feathers gave a nod to flappers. I wore it a few times over the past 5 years, but as you can see some of the sequins and things came off (I didn't use hot glue). Well, NOW feathers are in style (perhaps people won't look at me weird now when I wear feathers in my hair). I am so excited to see feathers popping up again, so I decided to buy a bag and make some fun headbands with them. The first is pictured above. This site inspired me (and reassured me that the idea I had FIVE YEARS AGO was in fact cool)...

Check it out!
So Eva of Sycamore Street Press did the coolest thing for me yesterday! She posted a little interview on her blog to spread the word about my art and blueeyedfreckle business (her beautiful line of letterpressed work has recently been featured on DesignSponge and a few other prominent blogs). Seriously cool. Thanks Eva!

a new idea
I've been having all of this inner turmoil about making art, making stuff for my etsy shop, and creativity/uniqueness. I periodically go through these phases where I battle between making things that bring exquisite joy to me, but may not appeal to the masses, and making things that are sellable. Starting this new business has brought about a lot of this turmoil. So much so that I was very unhappy for a couple days there last week. After much pondering and seeking out answers, I decided to take blueeyedfreckle in what I think is a better direction. It isn't changing completely, but my process is. I want to create a little unique work of art with each piece. I don't want to do a search on Etsy and find 20 other pieces that are incredibly similar to mine!
so yesterday I sat down in my little studio surrounded by all the scraps of projects past. I wondered what I should do, when I looked up and saw the drawing pictured above. It had been a doodle I sketched during some boring meeting last year. I knew that that is what I needed to feed my new designs. The doodles and artwork I had already created! It was the perfect solution! I can now continue to create artwork and the artwork can inspire the craft!
As I created the two pieces pictured above, I felt like I was painting. I used the felts and leatherettes as my paint. It is much more fulfilling to create when I view it as art-making then just money-making. Maybe the masses will think these are a little too funky to wear (which I am used to), but at least I will love making them. And perhaps someone will come along who does love them, and I can feel happy that I created something that excites them.

mon atelier
This is the studio I created where the dining room should've been in our apartment. I am in love with it! It is cardboard-themed though it may be hard to tell from the photo. I will have more about that aspect in a later post! Anyway, I have always wanted a nice studio in my living space so that I can simultaneously be at home with my husband, and have a place to store and make all my stuff. It's like a dream!
